The Problem with Problem Solving in Scientific Career Management

Title and Description: The Problem of Problem-Solving in Scientific Career Management.

As scientists (and trainees) we are trained to be expert problem-solvers.  This works well in the lab and at the bench and is vitally important for solving definable problems needing clear choices and decisions.  However, in career development and management we are often faced not problems to be solved but with polarities to be managed. When a polarity is misconstrued as a problem to be solved, we get a series of predictable negative consequences. In this presentation/workshop, participants will be introduced to the idea and practice of polarity management.  They will identify several common polarities and how to successfully manage the polarity so as to avoid the negative consequences.
